You only have a few days left to visit the exhibition “Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso / Porto Lisboa / 1916-2016”, taking place at Lisbon’s Museum of Contemporary Art – MNAC.

Inaugurated in January and open until February 26, this exhibition gathers dozens of paintings by Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, one of the most important portuguese painters of all time, and it was first displayed in 1916, initially in Oporto and then in Lisbon.

One hundred years ago almost thousands of people flocked to see these paintings, that caused scandal and shocked many that, not understanding the genius of Amadeo, reacted by spiting on the canvas and insulting the artist.

Despite the public’s over passionate reception and several harsh reviews from journalists and art critics, the exhibition was considered an enormous success and made a come back one hundred years later, firstly in Oporto and now in Lisbon.

Maybe because it was so controversial before, maybe because Amadeo still remains one of the main figures of the Portuguese modernism, maybe because it is not so often to have the chance to see almost one hundred works by this artist all under the same roof, “Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso / Porto Lisboa / 1916-2016” proves History repeats itself, with thousands of people eager to visit it and willing to wait in line.

Due to the increased number of visitors, especially over the past few days, as the last opportunity to visit the exhibition comes closer, the MNAC decided to extend the opening hours. One can now visit it until 22:00, on February 23, 24 and 25.

If you can visit it during the day you will have a better chance of not standing in line but, if not, don’t miss this opportunity and hit the Museum of Contemporary Art by night.
