This lovely romantic garden has a place in almost every lisboner’s memories. Jardim da Estrela is that kind of park you remember going when you were a kid and kept going throughout the years.
Located in Estrela neighbourhood, right across the street from its noble neighbour, Basílica da Estrela, Jardim da Estrela heavy gates invite you to come in, either for a stroll, either to relax a bit, enjoying a good book, or just to take a scenic shortcut through the park listening to the sound of the church’s bells.
It opened in 1852 and it was one of the trendiest places in Lisbon, at that time. It used to have greenhouses, kiosks, a Chinese pavilion and even a lion. That’s it, a real lion, in a cage.
Luckily, over the centuries, Jardim da Estrela evolved and even got a new name, Jardim Guerra Junqueiro, after the 19th century Portuguese poet. But it managed to keep its beauty and charisma.
During Summer there are several events taking place there, namely markets, concerts or children’s activities, and one of its main attractions is a beautiful 19th century gazebo made of iron, that proudly stands by one of Jardim da Estrela’s entrances.
But one can also admire its diverse flora as well as some adorable ducks, swans, peacocks and coy fishes.
Jardim da Estrela is open 7 days a week, from 7:00 until midnight.
